    Editorial Assistant

    New York Times

The Opinion department of The New York Times is seeking an Editorial Assistant with an interest and, ideally, an expertise in technology issues. The job is ever-changing, but the primary duties involve research, fact-checking and helping review unsolicited submissions and pitches that arrive each week from writers around the world. Duties will depend on the daily needs of the department and might also include work on social media, newsletters, clerical duties and production tasks. This role will support and collaborate with the expanding team of Opinion editors and writers focused on pressing questions of technology: What’s the future of privacy in a digital age? How will artificial intelligence affect the economy? How much screen time should parents allow their children? And obviously much more. The editorial assistant must have a sharp eye for detail; a strong sense of fresh arguments and good writing; superb research skills; a devotion to the highest standards of accuracy, precision and verification; ability to dive into unfamiliar material on deadline; discretion in handling sensitive editorial material; and a strong interest in opinion journalism. Technical skills or expertise, such as data analysis, coding or an understanding of the laws regulating technology would be a plus but are not required. This position is represented by the Newspaper Guild of New York.
