Inspired by her twin daughters’ need for race-and gender-inclusive materials and by her own life as a school desegregation pioneer, Janus Adams created BackPax® -- an award-winning book, audio, and game series that has reached children in every US state, Canada, and the Caribbean.

As producer, Adams—Emmy Award-winning journalist, former NPR correspondent, author, and historian—travels the US with side trips abroad documenting unique authentic voices and stories; engaging children in history and culture through travel and adventure.

Now, with BackPax:EXPEDITIONS—the online magazine and community—and in celebration of the UN-declared International Decade for People of African Descent, Adams is connecting children worldwide in the most thrilling BackPax adventure yet: getting to know each other.

BackPax, the name means a lot. For travel and adventure, think of a backpack . . . For a commitment to children and their world, think pax, Latin for peace.

A celebration of life for ages 8-13, BackPax:EXPEDITIONS features:

  • live global phnone-in members-only meetings;
  • journeys the world over via BackPax; guided eTours;
  • member-contributed creative content;
  • opportunities to become Guest Junior Editors and lead a meeting with the BackPax team.

Donations will fund memberships for children, at home and abroad, who cannot afford to subscribe but whose participation enriches us all.
