NYWIFT Co-Presents NewFest Closing Night Film “Christy”

NYWIFT Co-presents the closing night film Christy at the 37th NewFest Film Festival on Sunday, October 19th.

Fueled by determination and an unrelenting will to win, Christy Martin (Sydney Sweeney) explodes from her small-town West Virginia roots into the world of professional boxing. Under the guidance of trainer Jim (Ben Foster), she becomes a champion, commanding a fiery persona inside the ring. But outside of it, her life begins to unravel as she confronts her family, her identity, and a relationship that turns violent and life-threatening.

Based on remarkable true events, Christy is a rare sports film with a queer real-life figure at its center — a gripping story of resilience, courage, and the fight to reclaim one’s life against all odds.

Pat, the evasive, androgynous SNL character played byJulia Sweeney, was a ubiquitous presence in the pop culture ether of the 1990s. As a kid, filmmaker Ro Haber grappled with a strange obsession with Pat — a character whose popularity hinged on them making others wildly uncomfortable with their refusal to adhere to strict gender lines. Both time and their identity moved forward and yet, even as an adult, Haber’s preoccupation remained.

Screening/Reception: Warrior Women

Join NYWIFT and Vision Maker Media for a reception, screening and conversation for the upcoming documentary Warrior Women by Christina D. King and Elizabeth A. Castle. In the 1970s, with the swagger of unapologetic Indianness, organizers of the American Indian Movement (AIM) fought for Native liberation as a community of extended families. Warrior Women is the story of Madonna Thunder Hawk, one such AIM leader who cultivated a rag-tag gang of activist children - including her daughter Marcella - into the "We Will Remember" Survival Group as a Native alternative to government-run boarding schools. Together, Madonna and Marcella fought for Native rights in an environment that made them more comrades than mother-daughter. Special guests Madonna Thunder Hawk and Marcella Gilbert will join the filmmakers in a conversation moderated by Producer Yvonne Russo.
