New York Women in Film & Television (NYWIFT) continues Women Filmmakers: Immigrant Stories with an excerpt from the art installation Surveillance: Silence = Death by Sha Sha Feng & Tami Kashia Gold.
Women Filmmakers: Immigrant Stories is a free screening series of work by women filmmakers focusing on the immigrant experience throughout the five boroughs of New York City. This series showcases a themed exhibition of short and feature-length films.

Directions: Take the Uptown/Queens Bound F train to the Roosevelt Av – Jackson Heights Station, and transfer to the Glendale Atlas PK Mall bound Q47 bus to 80 St/68 Rd. Take the Queens bound 7 train to 82nd Street Station and transfer to the Glendale Myrtle Ave bound Q29 to 80 St/77 Rd.
Screening followed by a Q&A and reception with the filmmakers with free beer and snacks.

Within days of the attack on 9/11, souvenir decks of playing cards were sold around ground zero vilifying the Iraqi military. The people portrayed on these cards appear ominous with black shadows while others were distorted photos. Another deck of cards were also sold called “Operation Iraqi Freedom – US Military Heroes” which promoted the US military. Years later there has been an increase in hate crimes against Muslims and an upsurge in the surveillance of all Americans. This multi-media installation explores the roots and growth of Islamophobia and its many repercussions on people’s lives.
Tami Kashia Gold is a professor at Hunter College, a filmmaker, writer and visual artist. Her films have consistently been at the forefront of social justice, focusing on issues of race, gender, sexual identity, labor and the role of police in the United States. She is recipient of Rockefeller and Guggenheim fellowships.
Sha Sha Feng combines the best of both the arts and technology to develop socially conscious media. She is a multimedia programmer and designer. Her work includes a range of experiments which integrate web based art and open source technologies.
