Member Profile: Susan Lacy
Susan Lacy is the creator and executive producer of AMERICAN MASTERS, which will be celebrating its 20th anniversary season on PBS. She has been responsible for the production and broadcast of more than 130 documentary films about the nation’s artistic and cultural landscape. Most recently, she produced the highly acclaimed AMERICAN MASTERS
Bob Dylan: No Direction Home.
Lacy is also an award-winning filmmaker. Her
Judy Garland: By Myself
earned her an Emmy award for writing and nomination for directing. She wrote, directed and produced
Joni Mitchell: Women of Heart and Mind
(IDA Outstanding Documentary nomination) and
Leonard Bernstein: Reaching for the Note
(Emmy award; DGA nomination). She produced the Peabody award-winners:
Bob Dylan: No Direction Home
and
Paul Simon: Born at the Right Time
. She also directed and produced
Rod Serling: Submitted for Your Approval
and
Lena Horne: In Her Own Voice
for AMERICAN MASTERS.
AMERICAN MASTERS has been recognized by television critics as “…the best biographical series ever to appear on American television.” Lacy has received the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Non-Fiction Series from 1999 – 2004. In addition, Lacy has received five Primetime Emmys for individual programs, seven Peabody Awards, two Grammys, as well as 31 Emmy and three Academy Award nominations.
Prior to AMERICAN MASTERS, Lacy was Deputy Director of Performance Programs at Thirteen/WNET. She was Senior Program Executive/Great Performances and Director of Program Development/The American Playhouse (She was a founding member.). She also headed the east coast office of the Sundance Institute.
Lacy was selected as one of the honorees at the 2005 Museum of Television & Radio’s “She Made It” event, honoring 50 exceptional women who have created and informed the genre. She serves on the Board of Governors of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and is a Trustee of the Independent Documentary Association.
