The Ride

“Are you missing anyone from your family . . .?”  asks an undertaker
in rural Mississippi.  He had just cut down another lynched body.

During one of the darkest periods of American history, lynching was a common form of perverted justice and terror, and a form of social event.  When a black man was being lynched, white people would gather around like it was a picnic.  They would bring their families, their children playing feet away from where the man was hung and left to sway in eternal silence.

The Ride is an animated documentary short recounting the oral history of a young girl’s first experience with the aftermath of this kind of event.  Set in Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1933, her point of view becomes ours as we ride in her world where the sky and ground are like maps come to life, where cotton fields become clouds, trees become witnesses and where everything is larger than life.

I invite you to take part in a historical film project which will give voice to a pivotal time in African American history.  Together we will present The Ride with a sensibility and compassion that pays honor to those thousands of men and women who died this way.

Thank you in advance for being a part of this historical and important project.  All donations are welcomed and appreciated.  All gifts are tax deductible.

Told through the eyes of a child with the wisdom of an elder.
