Synopsis
Caribbean born Jon Lucien, was a rising star in the 70s on track to become the next ‘big thing’ in Jazz music. He had a huge following of female audiences especially in New York. He sang and wrote romantic songs for women and about women that made them swoon. His music was constantly played on the radio. He performed to packed concert halls and more. However, mainstream music labels never understood or promoted him. They wanted to pigeonhole him – wanted him to be a ‘Black Sinatra.’ Personal tragedies, ongoing career struggles and drug problems plagued Lucien causing him to leave the industry in the late 1970s. He returned to music in the 1990’s, soon after to find that his unique smooth sound and style which had been ‘overlooked’ in the early days of his career had now caught on. Music that Jon Lucien helped to pioneer was now labelled as ‘Quiet Storm’ and ‘Smooth Jazz’ which became a huge phenomenon in 90’s America and with which many artists coming after Lucien still enjoy success to this day. 15 years after Lucien’s death in 2007, A New York woman Linnette Harrigan rediscovers Lucien music in a record collection owned by her mother who had passed away the year before. The rediscovery sets off a journey to find hidden truth about Jon Lucien who was also a distant family member.
