Let’s give a warm welcome to new NYWIFT member, the multi-talented Paula de la Fuente!
Hailing from Valladolid, Spain, Paula is a filmmaker, actress, writer, and director with a passion for storytelling. From gaining hands-on production experience on Spanish film sets and the Goya Awards ceremony to co-writing and producing her own horror short, Paula has already made significant strides in the industry.
Now, she’s pursuing her dreams in New York City, studying Acting for Film at the New York Film Academy as a Talent Award Scholarship recipient. Paula joins NYWIFT seeking connection, mentorship, and inspiration as she navigates the U.S. film scene.
Let’s dive into her journey and discover what drives this exciting new voice in filmmaking.

NYWIFT Member Paula de la Fuente
What brings you to NYWIFT?
Since my job experience is in Spain, moving to New York meant building new connections in the U.S. film and TV industry. A neighbor recommended I join NYWIFT, and after looking into it, I was drawn to the networking events, the intern-mentor program, and the many resources available to members!
What are your aspirations as a filmmaker, actress, writer, and director?
Although I began in film school and production-related jobs, I quickly realized my true love was writing and acting. Eventually, I hope to bring one of my projects to life and contribute to meaningful stories that inspire others as much as they inspire me.

What are some of the films that have inspired you and why?
My favorite director is Greta Gerwig, so anything she has made, but Little Women and Lady Bird hold a special place for me. Lady Bird made me deeply consider the power of dialogue and character development, while the March sisters in Little Women inspired me to be fearless and pursue acting in New York City.
How do you balance your creative pursuits as a student with the demands of your studies?
I try to blend them as much as possible. When assigned a scene or monologue, I repurpose it in my personal projects—whether by filming it for my reel or using it as inspiration for writing new short scenes and stories.

Pula on set.
What are you most looking forward to learning from the NYWIFT community?
I hope to connect with people who can guide me at the start of my career as both a screenwriter and an actress. I’m also excited to collaborate with other talented filmmakers!
What are some of the challenges you face as a young filmmaker trying to break into the industry?
Breaking into the industry is challenging, especially as a non-American citizen. Many places hesitate to hire someone who requires a work visa, which has been frustrating. However, I’m confident the right opportunity will come at the right time. I plan to apply for OPT at the end of my NYFA program, which I hope will open doors.
What is your vision for the kind of stories you want to tell?
I want to tell stories that comfort people. Most of my stories revolve around female perspectives, which has always been my favorite lens on life. More than anything, I want to create something that helps people escape from their worries, even if just for a little while.
