Dr. Jan Yager, a sociologist and victimologist, is the award-winning, bestselling author of 67 nonfiction and fiction titles, with translations of one or more books into 36 languages. Her well-regarded textbook, Essentials of Victimology, is published by Aspen Publishing (2025, 2022) and her popular book on friendship, When Friendship Hurts, an outgrowth of her sociology dissertation, published by Simon & Schuster, has 29 foreign translations.
She received her Ph.D. in Sociology from CUNY Graduate Center (1983) which gave her their Distinguished Alumni Award in 2006. Jan has an MA in Criminal Justice from Goddard College, a BA in Fine Arts from Hofstra University, and she did graduate courses in psychiatric art therapy at Hahnemann Medical College.
Almost 30 years ago, Jan founded her indie press, Hannacroix Creek Books, Inc. In 2025-2026, Jan is working on her first documentary to be produced by her indie press.
Jan is married to Fred Yager, a writer and editor. They have two adult sons, Scott and Jeff, who now have families of their own.
