In Memoriam: NYWIFT Member Anne K. Johnson

Longtime NYWIFT member Anne K. Johnson.

The NYWIFT community is mourning the loss of long-time member Anne K. Johnson who passed away Thursday, Oct 4 from pancreatic cancer.

Anne Kramer Johnson, née Anne Gladstone Kramer, was born at Beth Israel Hospital on Friday, May 8, 1942 in New York City. Her parents were Charles Kramer and Mamie Mildred Kramer. Annie, as her loving husband of over 50 years, Charles Johnson, referred to her, enjoyed a huge activist-rooted life before having children. Anne and Charles married on May 29, 1965 in New York City. This was just 12 days before “LOVING VS. VIRGINIA” was decided in their favor, making their groundbreaking interracial marriage the law of the land across the United States.

During their early years, Anne found work as a bookkeeper and learned to prepare income taxes while raising their two children, Ali and Laura. While developing her own personal income tax preparation business, she began working for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre where she combined her intimate involvement in the arts with her skills in business administration. Anne went on to fulfill her lifelong dream of working as a Production Accountant on dozens of films, including: Party Monster, Notorious, and For Love Of The Game.

Annie was a dedicated and determined, long-standing member of several industry organizations, including: the New York Production Alliance, New York Women in Film and Television, and IATSE Local 161 where she was guild president. She was a fierce advocate for unionized workers everywhere, marching with pride in many of NYC’s Labor Day Parades.

She is survived by her children Laura and Ali, Ali’s husband Kevin Carter, three nieces, four nephews, and a host of beloved friends. Her children will be having a small in-person family-centered Memorial Celebration at Benta’s Funeral Home Oct 23 from 1-4pm ET. The service will be live-streamed for all other guests. Due to covid restrictions, attendance is reserved for close family and friends. Learn more about the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, Anne’s family ask that her community members please make a donation to Anne’s favorite organizations: Planned Parenthood, ACLU, and NYWIFT.
