NYWIFT’s Designing Women, a leading New York City awards event, honors renowned costume designers, makeup artists and hairstylists in film, television and digital media. This unique showcase, co-presented by Variety, is attended by actors, producers, directors, writers, fashion industry leaders and, of course, designers.
The awards are presented by actors who work closely with the designers, and the ceremony is followed by a reception featuring displays of the designers’ work, including actual costumes!
Proceeds from Designing Women benefit the nonprofit educational programs of New York Women in Film & Television.
The 2018 ceremony took place on Monday, May 21st at 7 PM at Stage 48.
The 2018 honorees were:
Costume designer Dana Covarrubias (Quantico, Claws, Master of None)
Hair stylist Anita Lausevic (The Deuce, Instinct, Royal Pains)
Makeup artist Martha Melendez (Netflix’s She’s Gotta Have It, Roxanne Roxanne, BlacKkKlansman)
The Variety Ensemble Award was presented to the hair, makeup and costume design team from Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle.
The presenters were Christine Ebersole (Royal Pains), Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Deuce), Nia Long (Roxanne Roxanne), and Debra Monk (Mozart in the Jungle).
This year we had three special presentations via video as well! Mark Feuerstein (Royal Pains), Elizabeth McGovern (The Chaperone), Lena Waithe (Master of None) all paid tribute from afar.
We live-tweeted the proceedings – you can see highlights when you search #dwgala on Twitter – and we went live on Facebook, broadcasting the red carpet arrivals as well as the ceremony itself.
