Producing, Curating and Releasing using Apple iBooks Author

Book production is similar to adapting prose for film: one must curate plot points and find a director to lead a team in executing a singular vision. The end products in both processes should be interaction, which makes for many creative decisions. Does the sound effect advance the narrative? Is the video a distraction? How does monologue deepen the audience's understanding of the character?

Jillian Abbott used Apple iBooks Author to make Air Quality, which became the first narrative adaptation to employ the software. iBooks Author was designed with non-fiction material in mind, making this panel of specific interest to documentary filmmakers, or any filmmakers who want to present their material in multimedia (rather than single format/medium). Abbott's presentation will take attendees through the highs, lows and how-to questions that Abbott encountered.

Jillian Abbott released her enhanced and interactive short story, Air Quality, through iTunes and the iBookstore in April 2013. It currently sells in the US, UK, Australia, the Netherlands and Sweden. Abbott presented Air Quality at Bath Spa University's Mix2: Text on Screen, an international conference on digital writing in July 2013. Abbott is an adjunct lecturer in English at Long Island University, Post Campus and Queensborough Community College. Her award-winning traditional short stories have been published in Australia, India and the US, including in Queens Noir. Her opinion, features and lifestyle pieces have been published in the Washington Post, The Irish Times, The Australian, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Independent, The Writer and many other outlets.  Air Quality can be viewed via the iBookstore.
