Lapa: The Heart of Samba

Lapa: The Heart of Samba (Samba da Lapa) is a full-length documentary from Split Rock Films that takes the viewer through the heart of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's capital of samba. The film explores the bohemian neighborhood of Lapa, where a new generation of samba composers and musicians is flourishing. Using footage of live performances, in-depth demonstrations of samba instruments and interviews with key players in the Lapa scene, filmmaker and New York City-based samba singer Irene Walsh shows us this community and their music through their eyes.

Irene Walsh
has twenty years of theater and film experience under the lights and behind the scenes. She has worked on camera with Sigourney Weaver and Anthony LaPaglia (The Guys) and on stage with Kathleen Turner, Bebe Neuwirth, Gloria Reuben, Bill Irwin and others. Walsh is the president of Bats, the actors company based at NYC's Flea Theater, and was honored with the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council's Charles Maikish Award for her work there. Her current project, LAPA is a confluence of her music and acting work and time in Brazil.
