Member Profile: Tina Chen
Tina Chen is an actor, director and producer. Her performances have been seen on the screen, television and the stage. And, she has directed and produced for the theatre.
Her films include
The Hawaiians
(playing against Charlton Heston), for which she received a Golden Globe Award nomination;
Alice’s Restaurant
(Arthur Penn);
Three Days of the Condor
(Sydney Pollack); and, most recently,
Face
. She has starred in numerous television specials. She played the title role in the
Lady from Yesterday
and was nominated for an Emmy for
The Final War of Olly Winter
.
Chen is signed to play the role of Mother God Damn on Broadway in the 2007 revival of the 1926 classic,
The Shanghai Gesture
. She has had leading roles in over 20 productions on and off Broadway, including
Empress of China
,
The Joy Luck Club
and
Family Devotions
(David Henry Hwang).
Chen received a Drama Desk Award nomination as an associate producer of Terrance McNally’s
The Rink
(music and lyrics by Kander & Ebb, starring Chita Rivera and Liza Minelli). She also co-produced the Broadway play,
Passion
, (written by Peter Nichols, starring Frank Langella). Her directing credits include
Fairy Bones
(with Lucy Liu) for the Pan Asian Repertory Theatre.
Chen wrote the music for the holiday song,
This Tree
(lyrics by Ruth Wolff), which premiered at the Silver Jubilee Concert of the Hong Kong Children’s Choir. Her lecture,
Legacy of My Chinese Family
, is about three generations of her mother’s family and their roles in China’s history.
She is on the board of the Women’s Project & Productions and is a member of the National Council of the Aspen Music Festival & School. Chen helped Chinatown resident affected by 9/11 translating for the Red Cross. She volunteers as a reader to the sight impaired at the Lighthouse Inc.
