The Research and Media Intern supports the Research and Media team with all daily and long-term tasks, including media analysis, press support, and research inquiries. A successful intern will be an enterprising worker with a high attention to detail, an ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, a willingness to learn things quickly, and an interest in New York politics.

The Agency You’ll Join:

The New York City Mayor’s Office is responsible for overseeing city services throughout the five boroughs, coordinating public agencies and departments, and managing public property. The Team You’ll Work With:

The Mayor’s Office for Research and Media Analysis monitors media coverage related to the mayor and his policies and actions, vets individuals in contact with City government, and conducts research in support of the Mayor’s communications priorities.

The Problems You’ll Solve:

The Mayor’s Office for Research and Media Analysis is accepting applications for a Research and Media Analyst intern. This role is ideal for someone interested in New York City politics and communication.

Responsibilities of the Research and Media Analyst intern include, but are not limited to:

  • Monitoring news sites and social media in real-time and disseminating breaking stories.
  • Transcribing the Mayor’s remarks for public release.
  • Supporting the Press team with research inquiry support upon request.
  • Compiling early morning or evening press clippings.
  • Creating reports on broadcast news coverage.
  • Searching for relevant stories in television broadcasts, radio, traditional media outlets, and community papers.
  • Conducting thorough background vetting and ensuring all information aligns with organizational standards and priorities.
  • Additional research projects in support of short- and long-term communications needs.

About You:

  • You have a graduate or undergraduate degree (in progress undergraduate degrees are accepted)
  • Candidates who are active college students must be an enrolled and registered student accumulating credits at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school.
  • You are detail-oriented, highly organized, and an excellent communicator with great interpersonal skills, and possesses a willingness to learn and adapt within a fast-paced working environment.
  • You have the ability to handle multiple projects at once with competing deadlines
  • You have some prior experience in politics (e.g., in political campaigns, in local/state/federal politics, in advocacy)
  • You can write clear and concise copy free of grammatical, syntactical, and spelling errors
  • You have exposure to AP style (preference for candidates with working knowledge of AP style)
  • While not required, applicants who have exposure or fluency to multiple languages are especially encouraged to apply.

Salary:

  • Undergraduate College Students: $17.75 per hour
  • Graduate Students: $18 per hour
