NYWIFT Women’s History Month Spotlight: Kelsey Marsh

By Tammy Reese

Happy Women’s History Month! At NYWIFT as we continue to celebrate our creative members who are making innovative impacts through entertainment,  media, film, and television, we would like to spotlight our NYWIFT Women Crush Wednesdays Podcast team members.

Today’s spotlight is Kelsey Marsh.

Kelsey Marsh is a Line Producer at NowThis currently overseeing their Earth and Impact partnerships. She has six years experience in managing inspiring, entertaining, and educational productions for broadcast and digital platforms.

Her experience in development, production operations, and post -production management helps seamlessly guide projects from concept through final delivery. Kelsey began her career working in unscripted television at Maryland Public Television, Discovery and National Geographic.

How did your career as Line Producer for NowThis begin?

I joined NowThis in October 2019 as a Production Manager on a year-long project producing mini docs & explainers on climate change, immigration reform, voter rights and education policy. I was able to learn and grow in the role and my responsibilities expanded over time, so naturally my title changed to reflect the leadership and ownership of my work.

How has overseeing their Earth and Impact partnerships made an impact on you personally?

I’m so fortunate to work on content that has incredible meaning, depth and purpose. I am a returned Peace Corps volunteer, so living in service, lifting up diverse voices and providing real educational tools is important to me both professionally and personally.

The work that you do is absolutely inspiring. Who are some women in the industry who inspire you?

I’m inspired by all the women that have forged careers in this industry before me, so that my path is more than just a dream but an actual reality. I’ve been blessed by great female bosses – Ashley Lorenzo Feldman, Nichole Reed, Jessica Borovay – and because of them I look forward to being a great female boss someday.

What was your experience like working for Discovery and National Geographic?

I greatly enjoyed working at Discovery and National Geographic, and credit those industry titans as affording me a solid foundation and understanding of the various departments and their functions that work cohesively to bring content to millions of people around the world.

I’ve always loved broadcast television (and am arguably the worst millennial because I’m not a cord cutter), and am eager for my next opportunity in that space.

What are some other memorable moments in your career so far?

My wonderfully talented coworkers and our shared journey in taking something from paper to screen is always memorable. From Puppy Bowl to Bradley Cooper instructing Pennsylvanians on how to vote in their state, it’s all a lovely, memorable experience.

What intrigued you to join NYWIFT?

I really value connecting with like-minded people, and learning from people’s experiences. I’m an advocate for equality in the workforce, feeling both supported and being supportive of others, and sharing in the greatness that is achieved by NYWIFT members.

What does your role entail with the Women Crush Wednesdays podcast team?

When I join new organizations, I like to join committees so that I stay connected and gain the most out of membership. I am always eager to learn new skills, and podcasting is a great growth area for me professionally. As the other NYWIFT podcast team members can attest, I always say yes first. And if I try something and don’t like it, I won’t volunteer again! So, my role on the podcast team varies, but by and large I assist with the Women Crush Wednesdays spotlight segment.

What are you currently working on?

I’m currently line producing a short fiction film about the incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII.

How will you be celebrating Women’s History Month?

I’m celebrating Women’s History Month by celebrating all the important women in my life!
