The film summer isn’t complete without the teenage sex romp film. Running the spectrum from crude (Sex Drive and American Pie) to dramedy (The Sure Thing and Losin’ It ), rarely do these genre movies portray teenage girls eager to lose it with as much gusto and determination as teenage boys; that has now changed with The To Do List written and directed by Maggie Carey.
Now playing in theaters, The To Do List, will be part of the cult classic canon of “losing the virginity” genre movies, but for girls. Not since 1980’s Little Darlings has the subject of a girl’s quest for deflowering been portrayed in such a fresh and funny way.
The talented up and coming comedic screen talent, Aubrey Plaza (Safety Not Guaranteed) plays Brandy Klark, an eighteen year old valedictorian determined to become more sexually experienced before she heads to college in the fall. The cast is rounded out by excellent performances by Bill Hader (SNL), Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development) and Andy Samberg (SNL) whose appearance in an ill fitting wig is one of the best cameos of the summer. The jokes and situations are unexpected for this kind of genre comedy and the ‘cherry on top" is it’s directed by a woman.
Kudos to Maggie Carey for creating a funny sex romp for and about girls.
The To Do List is playing in New York City at the City Cinemas Village East or near a theater by you.
