Member Profile: Eileen Newman
Eileen Newman
is deputy director of Renew Media, formerly National Video Resources, where she is the organization’s chief programmatic and operating manager. In this role, she oversees the organization’s Media Arts Fellowships, awarding approximately $800,000 annually to media artists. In addition, she is in charge of helping filmmakers disseminate their films to broader audiences.
Newman was previously executive director of the National Board of Review and Senior Director of Programming at the Independent Feature Project (IFP), where she ran the mentor and diversity program, Project Involve.
For many years, she was the executive director of Film/Video Arts, rejuvenating the organization into a major international film and video presence. The organization served as fiscal sponsor for 175 independent film and video makers annually, as well as provided classes and workshops covering a wide-range of filmmaking subjects.
Newman has served on many funding panels including the Jerome Foundation and Massachusetts Cultural Council. She has served on the boards of New York Women in Film and Television (NYWIFT) and New York Production Alliance (NYPA). She is currently board president of Manhattan Neighborhood Network (MNN).
Newman began her career in education and segued into media arts running a program (sponsored by the New York State Council on the Arts -NYSCA) that introduced teenagers to the work of independent filmmakers.
She has taught cinema studies at Adelphi and lectured widely on media issues.
