Member Profile: June Cross

June Cross is an Emmy -winning television producer and journalist with over 30 years experience. She is a tenured professor at Columbia University’s School of Journalism and author of the memoir, Secret Daughter.

The book is based on her autobiographical film examining how race affected her family. The documentary, also called Secret Daughter, won an Emmy and duPont-Columbia Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism. She is currently working on a documentary about the Katrina Diaspora funded by grants from the Kaiser Foundation and Open Society Institutte.

She was senior producer for This Far by Faith: Stories from the African-American Religious Experience, which aired nationally on PBS in 2003. When the series’ original producer ran out of money, Cross created a nonprofit, The Faith Project, Inc., assumed executive producer responsibilities and raised nearly a million dollars to complete the film.

Cross was producer/correspondent for PBS’s MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour, and a producer for CBS News. Her reporting for the News Hour on the US invasion of Grenada won the 1983 Emmy for Outstanding Coverage of a Single Breaking News Story. Other credits include Ashes of the Cold War; Showdown in Haiti; The Confessions of RosaLee, A Kid Kills and, as senior producer, Living on the Edge and Mandela.

Cross has taught seminars in journalistic ethics and covering race relations. She currently teaches broadcast news and documentary journalism at Columbia”s Graduate School of Journalism.
