Member Profile: Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady

Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady are documentary filmmakers and co-founders of the New York-based production company Loki Films.

The team has just completed their second documentary feature, Jesus Camp, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, winning the Special Jury Prize. The film looks at the Evangelical movement through the eyes of children. It is the first ever look at into an intensive training ground that recruits born-again Christian children to become an active part of the country’s future. Jesus Camp was released by Magnolia Films on September 22 in New York and will be seen nationwide on October 6. (www.jesuscampthemovie.com/)

Their first film was the critically-acclaimed Boys of Baraka, broadcast on PBS and released theatrically by ThinkFilm. Made over four years, the film follows a group of resilient boys from inner city Baltimore who leave home to attend an experimental boarding school in Kenya. The film was the recipient of numerous festival prizes and was honored with the 2006 NAACP award for Outstanding Independent Film.

Ewing and Grady have taken on a wide array of subject matter including the inner workings of Scientology, the struggle for political dissent in Cuba, the plight of the criminally insane and the criminal justice system labyrinth in New York. Together, and individually, they have produced and directed documentary projects for A&E, The Discovery Channel, VH1, as well as Channel Four and other international networks.
