Karen Williams is a producer, writer, actor and youth advocate. She is the founder and president of No Child is Somebody Else's Child, Inc., a not-for-profit organization that facilitates the production of arts-based initiatives and programs for children and youth from under-served communities.
Karen conceived and produced Bring Your 'A' Game (BET, Sept 2009) a documentary film set in a video-game style world featuring a whos who of prominent African-American men promoting high school graduation and success for Black and Latino male youth. Karen also produced, Fair Game (TV-One, Jan 2010), a documentary film in which a wide range of African-American males debate whether the playing field has been leveled for Black males in the post-Obama age in regard to education, criminal justice and economic conditions. Karen was the Consulting Producer for Against the Odds pilot video produced by Ellis Cos Inc, NPR, 2009, and the Associate Producer on Hard Luck, Columbia Pictures Corp, 2006, a feature film directed by Mario Van Peebles, starring Wesley Snipes and Cybil Shepherd.
Karen's film career began as an assistant to the producer and director of Boomerang, Paramount Pictures, and Bebes Kids, Tri-Star Pictures. She then worked as a Development Consultant for Harry Belafonte, Belafonte Enterprises Inc, Timothy White, for Catch A Fire, based on the life of Bob Marley, Hallmark Entertainment, and as a Story Consultant for Life and Debt, New Yorker Films.
Karen was a TV staff-writer for Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, ABC. She is currently developing and co-writing a feature film adapted from the novel Tide Running by Oonya Kempadoo, Beacon Press.
Karen's acting credits include recurring roles on Homicide:Life on the Street, NBC, Guiding Light, CBS, All My Children, ABC, and guest starring appearances on K Street, HBO, Madigan Men, ABC, The Courage to Love, Lifetime Television, What the Deaf Man Heard, Hallmark, Cosby, NBC, Law and Order, NBC, Another World, NBC, For Love of the Game, Universal Pictures, and Posse, Gramercy Pictures. She has also been featured in numerous national TV ad campaigns.
With the strong belief that no child is somebody else's child, Karen is a tenacious youth advocate, as evidenced by her multiple collaborations as producer, promoter, media consultant, theatre and public speaking instructor, and volunteer, with several New York City-based non-profits including Twenty-First Century Foundation, Friends of Island Academy, 21st Centry Classical, Mentoring USA, IMPACT, City Kids, Friends of Island Academy, Art Start, Legal Outreach, Eagle Academy, Foster Pride, TEAK Fellowship, iMentor, Street Squash.
Karen holds a B.A. in International Relations from Brown University and an M.A. in African and Caribbean Studies from University of Londons School of Oriental and African Studies, SOAS, in England.
