Full Bio
Currently based in New York, Maria has worked as a TV producer/director, film director, cinematographer, photographer and journalist. Most recently, she was Producer/Director on Fusion's hit series Shade: Queens of NYC, looking at the real life of drag queens in New York City. Previously, she was a Field Producer/Director for National Geographic's flagship series Explorer (2016) and a Shooter/Producer on ABC News's critically acclaimed 8-part documentary series, NY Med (2012). In 2011, her film Sarabah, about Senegalese rapper-activist Sister Fa, won the Golden Butterfly Award for Human Rights Filmmaking, at the Movies That Matter Film Festival and went on to appear at over 60 festivals internationally and on television in three countries. Gambale has lived in Turkey and Italy, and writes frequently on development issues and peace activism. She mentors Brooklyn teen filmmakers through the Reel Works program.
