Join NYWIFT at DOC NYC 2021
The 12th annual edition of DOC NYC, the largest documentary film festival in the US will run Nov 10-28. This year’s festival will take place in theaters and online, so audiences across the country can tune in and watch the best new documentaries. Co-founded by Thom Powers and Raphaela Neihausen, the festival is the country’s largest documentary film festival with over 300 films and events and 250 special guests. NYWIFT will be co-presenting four screenings at DOC NYC 2021:
No Man’s Land (dir. Anna Andersen, Gabriella Canal)
No Man’s Land is a short documentary about a lesbian separatist community in the rural American South. The 1970s saw the birth of womyn’s lands, communities where lesbian separatists could live together, away from a patriarchal society. A handful of these womyn formed Alapine in rural Alabama, where no men are allowed. No Man’s Land dives into the stories of its founders and residents, who give perspective on their struggles as lesbian women during the 60s and 70s. The film explores their coming out stories, what inspired them to create a separatist space in the first place, what that space means to them and their concerns for the sustainability and the future of their community.

In Conversation with Joan Churchill
Joan Churchill, the recipient of DOC NYC’s 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award, has a prodigious career. She started as a cameraperson on films such as Gimme Shelter and Jimi Plays Berkeley; and co-directed several films with Nick Broomfield including Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer and Soldier Girls. In this live conversation moderated by Cameraperson director Kirsten Johnson, Churchill discusses her career and shares a new short documentary, Shoot from the Heart, about Haskell Wexler, D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus.

The Energy War “Filibuster” (dir. Chris Hegedus, D. A. Pennebaker, Pat Powell)
Long before documentary series were trending, filmmakers D.A. Pennebaker, Chris Hegedus and Pat Powell created this ground-breaking episodic look at a Washington DC legislative battle in 1977-78. First aired on public television, the series has scarcely been seen since. But its themes of politicians struggling to fix America’s energy policy feel all too familiar in today’s push for a Green New Deal. DOC NYC will show the newly restored chapter “Filibuster” that makes for a gripping film on its own.

The Business of Birth Control (dir. Abby Epstein)
There can be no real gender justice without an unpacking of the power structures surrounding the reproductive health industry complex—and of the choices that the market pushes on women. Abby Epstein’s latest documentary highlights the dark history of eugenics and underfunded research that the birth control pill, often heralded as a feminist turning point in the history of reproductive rights, hides within itself.
