Today’s new technology platforms have created a growing industry for writers. Some of today’s most exciting storytelling is being developed to supplement a core television show or movie. And it has amassed audiences on its own merits. Learn the ins and outs of how some writers are tapping into the opportunity from some heavy duty experts in the field.
They'll discuss how they create material for web series, games and other interactive platforms in addition to films and TV shows. In many instances, the spin-offs and tie-ins can't rely on the main actors or crew — and they must be produced for a fraction of the core content’s budget.
Nick Bernardone is a writer/director that has worked on such TV shows as 30 Rock, I Just Want My Pants Back, Big Lake and several TV pilots. Recently, he was nominated for an Emmy and won a Producers Guild of America award for his work on the 30 Rock webisodes. Bernardone also creates web content with his sketch group HotGarbageVideo, which is featured on Cracked.com, Channel101, YouTube, MyDamnChannel and UCBComedy.com. Using similar resources from his new media projects, Nick wrote/directed a half-hour pilot, Classless, on a web-series budget.
John Esposito's credits include the screenplays for Stephen King's Graveyard Shift and Talos The Mummy, and he also co-produced the cult classic From Dusk Till Dawn. His TV work includes The Black Cat for ABC, The Haunting Hour and multiple episodes of the Warner Bros. animated series Teen Titans. Most recently, John scripted the first ever web series based on AMC's The Walking Dead, for which he received both the 2012 and 2013 Writers Guild Award for Outstanding Achievement in New Media.
Andrea Phillips is a transmedia writer, game designer and author of A Creator's Guide to Transmedia Storytelling. Her work includes a variety of educational and commercial projects, including The Maester's Path for HBO's Game of Thrones with Campfire Media; America 2049 with human rights nonprofit Breakthrough; and the independent commercial ARG Perplex City. Her indie work includes the ongoing Kickstarter serial transmedia project The Daring Adventures of Captain Lucy Smokeheart.
George Strayton has designed and written viral marketing campaigns for such films as Transformers 1, Transformers 2, and JJ Abram's Star Trek. They provided interactive experiences while serving as narrative "prequels" to the movies. In addition to writing and producing films and television series for Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures and KO Paper Products, he has also worked as a designer, writer, and editor on dozens of games. Strayton has been nominated for three Game of the Year Awards and won the 2012 Innovative Game Design of the Year Award from I-CON for his original game The Secret Fire.
Moderator Dana Weissman is the Director of Programs at the Writers Guild of America, East. She directs all member events and programs for WGAE, including elections, seminars, workshops, panel discussions, social events, screenings, film festival outreach, and the annual WGA Awards competition and celebration. Previously, she held positions at the 92nd Street Y, The Educational Alliance, and Care2.com. She is a founding member of Emerging Leaders in New York Arts and the co-founder of the Tufts Alumni Nonprofit Roundtable. She recently joined WFUV Radio’s Community Advisory Board.
