The Dharamsala Media Center Project is a media center in Dharamsala, India, created to enable His Holiness the Dalai Lama to participate in teleconferencing, web-casting, to speak with the press and to reach the world without having to leave his home base.
On March 31st, 2009, His Holiness he Dalai Lama presided over a ceremony in New Dehli to thank India for granting him a home in exile for the past 50 years. His Holiness will celebrate his 74th birthday on July 6th, 2009. Last year he had to cancel several overseas trips to due to exhaustion; he has repeatedly said that he can no longer sustain his heavy travel schedule.
At present the Dalai Lama'a office is only equipped for web-casting and collecting video footage of speeches and teachings. The financial crisis has forced networks and newspapers to cut back on travel, fewer journalists and filmmakers will be able to visit Dharamsala. On March 17, 2009, it was proposed to create a telecommunications facility to maximize his accessibility.
