The Women's Film Preservation Fund Honored by Anthology Film Archives on June 25

New York Women in Film & Television’s Women's Film Preservation Fund (WFPF) was among the honorees at this year’s Anthology Film Archives Film Preservation Honors and Benefit, held at The Standard in New York on June 25. In addition to the WFPF, Anthology Film Archives honored Richard Pena, Former Program Director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center; and the film lab Cinetech.

Each year, Anthology Film Archives honors those who have made important contributions to our collective film heritage at its Film Preservation Honors and Benefit, which also supports Anthology’s ongoing film preservation and public screening programs. Anthology has been holding this benefit since 1992 and previous honorees include Martin Scorsese, the National Film Preservation Foundation, Celeste Bartos, the Cinémathèque Française, Albert Maysles, and the Library of Congress, among many others. Anthology Film Archives has been dedicated to preserving, presenting, and promoting independent, noncommercial, and avant-garde cinema for over 40 years. Anthology is currently working on a major digital initiative to make its collections universally accessible online.

The Women's Film Preservation Fund (WFPF) is the only program in the world dedicated to preserving the cultural legacy of women in the industry. It was founded in 1995 by New York Women in Film & Television (NYWIFT), in conjunction with the Museum of Modern Art. The WFPF identifies, preserves, presents, and promotes American films in which women have played a significant creative role.

Pena has been the Program Director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center and Director of the New York Film Festival since 1988. In 2012, he retired from these two positions. At the Film Society he organized many retrospectives, including ones of Michelangelo Antonioni, Robert Aldrich and Ritwik Ghatak. Cinetech is a film lab that is deeply involved in film restoration, using digital resources as necessary to repair damaged films made during the first century of cinema. They are known for their excellent restoration work and are a supporter of the National Film Preservation Foundation's Partnership Grant Program.
