Mariposa: A film by Betty Marisol García
Mariposa
is a character-based drama about friendship, redemption and personal
freedom. Framed within the richly cultural and diverse neighborhood of
Washington Heights, it tells the story of two apparently very different
women from the same community. Mari,
a young single mother just out of prison, finds herself fighting for
the custody of her daughter. Penniless and alone and in a desperate
need for employment, she resigns herself to caring for Gloria, a lonely
and difficult elderly widow, Gloria a retired ballroom dancer has a
hard time letting go of her husband and long time dancing partner. She
also struggles with severe physical and emotional symptoms of old age. Out of Mari's and
Gloria's isolation and grief emerges an unlikely and complex
friendship, which inspires Mari to embark on a passionate quest for her
own personal freedom.
