Ornament of Beauty

Ornament of Beauty is a dark and surreal short narrative film inspired by Shakespeare’s Sonnet 70. Alina dashes through a gloomy cemetery, fleeing from the voices of slander that materialize in the form of Raum, a demonic, crow-headed man. Paralyzed by his control in this fever-dream, Alina is forced to face her oppressor in order to find freedom. Shakespeare’s text in voiceover brings context to this visual play of allegory and magical realism, in a story about transformation through the confrontation and ultimate embrace of our shadows.

Co-written and produced by Andy Fortenbacher and Stephanie Sellars (NYWIFT member), directed by Fortenbacher, and starring Sellars, both MFA Columbia graduates.  In association with Sonnet Project NYC, New York Shakespeare Exchange, and Blonde+Co.

The purpose of this project is to interpret and reinvent Shakespeare’s lesser known sonnets through film, thereby exposing new audiences to his work. Upon its completion the film will be featured on the Sonnet Project NYC website and the producers will submit to film festivals. The film is shot but we are seeking support for post-production and film festival submissions. Help us bring Shakespeare’s Sonnet 70 to the screen!
