NYWIFT and Splash Studios present: Show and Grow, the work-in-progress screening and discussion series, on Thursday, January 7, 2010.
SHOW and GROW is NYWIFT's
program where members can screen unfinished or 'needs-work' film to an
appreciative, supportive, educated audience of fellow NYWIFT members
and friends. The audience will complete your written survey as well as
give you verbal feedback on your work. The program is organized and
moderated by filmmaker and NYWIFT member Alison McMahan, Ph.D.
This
is a great opportunity for filmmakers with a work-in-progress to get
feedback and improve their work. Test screenings like this frequently
cost filmmakers hundreds of dollars; NYWIFT and Splash studios provide
this service to NYWIFT members for free.
NYWIFT organizes Show and Grow sessions once a month, based on demand. This program features the work of artist and documentary filmmaker , and NYWIFT member, Tova Beck-Friedman, HER WORLD, (30 mins) a documentary essay about a woman infatuated with glamour living in the twilight zone between reality and illusion.

About the Film:
Her World

by Tova Beck-Friedman
Synopsis:
A documentary essay based on the life story of Lillian Brown— woman caught between an Old World and a new country and between reality and infatuations with glamour. By marrying a distant relative twenty years her senior, Lillian forged her way out of poverty in her native Hungary. Arriving at the threshold of the Great Depression in Morgantown, West Virginia, she learns that her new husband is involved in criminal activities there. After her husband's death Lillian and her daughter moved to Los Angeles. It was the Golden Era of Hollywood and Lillian supported herself as a high-end dressmaker. Being a beautiful woman herself, she was enthralled by Hollywood's allure and sought to associate herself with movie stars .
The narrative unfolds as family members tell Lillian's story from their own vintage points, each discussing events from a slightly different perspective. Photographs mixed with home movies and movie clips from the 1940's and 1950's highlight the seduction the movie world held over her . What emerges is a study of a woman who was infatuated with glamour and lived in the twilight zone between reality and illusion.
