MAN TO BE is a coming of age story that takes place in one of the impoverished neighborhoods of Istanbul, Turkey. The story depicts 16-year-old Kerem’s struggle to fit in with the values of a macho culture and his journey in creating his own set of values.

Kerem idolizes his shady uncle Bulent and wants to be respected as a man. When Bulent is threatened by the mafia to pay off his debt, he feels helpless and makes a plan to convince his mother to sell their house. Kerem gets involved in these plans and tries to help his uncle, but he is soon disappointed by Bulent’s ways. When Kerem feels humiliated by Bulent, a confrontation ensues between the two, forcing Kerem to take sides and come to terms with being a grown-up.
