Quarter Life Crisis

by Robin Fusco

INT. LINDSEY’S APARTMENT, KITCHEN, HOBOKEN - NIGHT

Lindsey closes the photos and pulls up her contacts list. She
CLICKS on Amy Curtis, who was featured in most of the college
pictures.

A video call opens. AMY answers, her face filling the
computer screen.

AMY
Hey.

LINDSEY
You answered!

Amy puts on earrings and finishes her makeup.

AMY
Was using my camera as a mirror and
saw you pop up. How’s it goin’?

LINDSEY
I miss you! Haven’t seen you since
your wedding, almost --

AMY
Almost a year! Can you believe it?

LINDSEY
We used to call each other every
day over college breaks. I wanted
to talk about your trip!

AMY
Right....

LINDSEY
I have the spare room all set up.

STEVE (O.S.)
Did you tell her?

STEVE squishes next to Amy. Neither face fits completely on
the screen, leaving them jostling for position.

AMY
We’ve decided -

STEVE
- after careful thought and
consideration -

AMY
- that it’s time to grow our family
so -

AMY AND STEVE
- we’re going to have a baby!

Amy and Steve SHRIEK and rub their noses in Eskimo kisses.

LINDSEY
That’s great. Uh, hello? Amy!
Steve? Con...congratulations!

They finally stop.

AMY
I’m not pregnant yet.

LINDSEY
Still, that’s...great.

STEVE
But she can’t visit.

AMY
I can’t visit.

LINDSEY
We’ve been planning this!

AMY
But I’m going to have a baby.

STEVE
And there are certain things people
need to do in order to have a baby.

Steve squeezes Amy.

AMY
We have names to look at -

STEVE
- a nursery to decorate -

AMY
- and we have to make the baby!

STEVE
Taking a vacation isn’t an option
right now.

LINDSEY
I could take off. Come to you? Help
decorate?

Amy and Steve glance at each other.

AMY
Lindsey, college was, it was great.
But I have my own life now. I’m
sure you do too.

STEVE
We’ll send you a Christmas card -

AMY
- and a photo of the baby!

STEVE
It’s getting late.

AMY
We’re going out to celebrate our
baby! Bye!

They end the call.

Lindsey stares at the computer.

LINDSEY
Seriously?

Lindsey opens her search engine and inputs “ways to meet
people.”

Her eyes grow wide as she reads the suggestions.
